Fibropapillomatosis of sea turtles is probably caused by a herpes-type virus, and is causing an epidemic amongst sea turtles. Sea turtle fibropapillomatosis (FP) was first discovered in 1938. FP is a disease marked by proliferation of benign but debilitating cutaneous fibropapillomas and occasional visceral alien.

While much research has been and continues to be done to find the causes and remedies for FP, there is a new and alarming development. Fibropapilloma tumors are starting to show up on other sea turtle species in increasing numbers! If the same pattern of infection occurs as was seen with green turtles, it will not be long before FP outstrips even homo sapiens as the single greatest threat to marine turtles.

Growing up a surfer in Hawaii, the junior contests we traveled bunched together. Fighting over everything that didn’t matter like it did.

Andy was the best of us. He wanted more.

Andy was the leader without being more than himself. I was the youngest, poorest punk kid, more a fan than a friend.

At a contest, a bunch of us were done. Andy’s division was about to start. The boys wanted go back where we stayed for food and showers. I wanted watch Andy surf. The waves were good and Andy was becoming great.

If one of us didn’t go then transport hassles would mean none of us could go or risk trouble for leaving one behind. We were kids without much supervision but real scared of adults.

Bruce was always the smart ass. The best wit. Still is. He has a humor you can’t compete with. Sees what will get you.

He started on me about being stinky. That if I didn’t come back and shower and eat I was gonna get worse. He was on it. It hurt. But I stayed. I watched Andy surf. They left and got trouble for leaving me behind.

I got tagged with “stinky” for years after that. Bruce is the only one can still get away with it.

Andy realized our competitive dreams. Bruce showed me what I really wanted wasn’t on the tour. The Best Waves? Maybe one event every 2 years truly scores. The best waves are somewhere else. Most of the time.

So I took another road.

Today I surfed near perfect Indo, just a few guys out. All the time wishing Bruce was here and Andy there. We could fight over things that don’t matter. I could watch his brother on webcast. He could call me ‘stinky’ one more time.

I’ll settle for watching Bruce in Andy’s place.

Something the Big Guy upstairs seems to want as well, he’s delivering swell.

But Billabong is BrokeBong. Tied itself in rules and choked until it broke.

Now yes men say no to righting a wrong on a left at the end of the road.

They have forgotten what is surfing. They have forgetten what it is to be a surfer. They forget whoisBruce. They have forgotten to put the brother of their best ever surfer in to defend his last great title.

They have totally forgotten that “only a surfer knows the feeling”.

Please help Bong, right this wrong.

On my way to the Billabong Cloud 9 Invitational Surf Contest and its become clear the typhoon that is going to give us swell is also going to give more rain to the North of this beautiful country.

I will donate whatever I win to help with the recovery from this storm and its rain.

If you have spare time to think about this problem and spare money to help, please do. I am no expert on charities so please find one you like online. This country has had a bad run with typhoons this year and really needs help.

And they are wonderful people. Just like you.

Listen up my little brothers. Do not ride scooters in Bali unless you know the risks. Damea Dorsey knows the risks, but still tweaked out and hurt his foot. Bad.

It cost him plenty to get it fixed. And the thing likely still hurts when it rains and when its cold in the morning. Pipe has hurt me like that a couple times.

3 parts Noni, 4 parts Red Bull original, all ice cold, shaken with ice, then 1 part lemon juice squeezed in and stirred gently.

I don’t drink. Well, not often. Couple times a year I’d guess, maybe a couple times more if things go great, or bad.

So Mocktails are my fav when chillin with friends. I am in Tahiti. Home of Noni Juice. We have surfed all day, a new swell, big, a little wonky in the morning, but perfect in the afternoon and evening. We are relaxed and pleased with ourselves.

Noni Juice is a strong health drink made from an odd fruit. It tastes kind of punchy and funky. So I a made this mix to get the benefits and improve the taste.

This tastes fucken amazing. And looks mental as well. Likely makes you go all night. And the next day. 3 of these so far. I will try more.

I call this drink the “Halcyon Days” after the late great Miki Dora and his finest days. They were Halcyon Days of the finest kind. I imagine being him, but immortal and free as a bird, when I drink this mocktail perfection of life and energy. It is better than any cocktail I have had.

ASP = Association of Professional Surfers.

WPS = World Professional Surfers.

Both these organizations claim to be representing pro surfers. It’s not true. They only represent contest competing pro surfers on the World Championship Tour.

So I’m going to start the Free Surfers Federation. For all those that free surf. You don’t need to be a pro. Being a free surfer qualifies you. The Free Surfers Federation is Yours. And mine.

The Free Surfers Federation shall consider all issues facing Free Surfers. And will act, as it can, on behalf of its members in the interests of Free Surfing. Lets go.
